    High rev cut out under load.

    I just took my 82 GS 650 out for a test ride after rebuilding the carbs. The engine will rev fine in neutral, but under load it will cut out. I can pull the clutch in and rev it , and it sounds good. It has the filter, ans filter cover in place. Where to begin?

    Are you talking about an inline fuel filter?
    A lot of these are designed for pumped systems and will not flow enough for a gravity feed.

      The only fuel filter is the one attached to the fuel valve, and it is new.

        So filter = air filter


        When you say the engine "cuts out", are you experiencing a complete engine shut off, or just a drop in power delivery to the wheel?

          Any chance your air filter element is over oiled?

            Air filter is in place, and cover is on, with a new gasket. Under load, the engine will sputter, badly above a certain RPM, but in neutral, it will rev smoothly at high RPM's Can't tell you the exact RPM because the tach is not working, I think it;s stripped inside. Also, the air filter has not been oiled yet.

              Had similar issues with my 750. ran fine on the flat, any sign of a hill and it spluttered and lost power and drive. Not sure if your 'under load' is actually riding the bike or pulling up hill so my best guess based on my interpretation of your info.

                You are speaking in past tense so I'm hoping you got it sorted out. If so, what was the problem and solution in your case?

                  My issue was the timing was out. I have some fancy timing thingy fitted by my local bike shop when they wired the bike and it had slipped.

                      If not oiled you will be running lean... is it slow to return to idle too? Give us some history on recent maintenance performed please (I.e. carbs cleaned, O rings, intake boots, airbox boots etc)

                        In the past I have had several GS1100"s act like that.Even though this may not apply to your model.But I soldered the connections at the coils ,even if they felt tight cured it back then.Also do you have points ? if so inspect, clean,and check timing..
