1980 gs 850 g No vaccum to air box

I have an 1980 gs 850 with 17 k on it that sat for 33 years stored inside. Rebuilt the carbs and cleaned the fuel tank. It starts and runs ok but the only way it would start is by covering up the air filter with duct tape. there isn't any vacuum leaks at the top of the engine. The hose going from the top of the engine to the air box has no vacuum at all. Does anyone know how to fix this so there is some vacuum to the air box.
    Thanks Jamie

The hose you are describing is not a vacuum line. It is a crankcase breather vent and should not have a vacuum on it. I would check for air leaks in the carb boots.

When I die, just cremate me and put me in my GS tank. That way I can go through these carbs, one more time!https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/core/images/smilies/cool.png

1A) (NEW) Trying to diagnose running problems on a bike with an unknown maintenance history. Common maintenance items like clean carbs, properly adjusted valves, no air leaks in the intake system (airbox, carb boots), a clean gas tank (no rust), and a properly functioning petcock are 100% mandatory for the bike to run properly.

        Just two questions:

        1. How did you "rebuild" the carbs?

        2. Have you check valve clearances?
