    Upgrade signal generator on GS650

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and hoping to get some help with my 1981 GS650G Katana. It's heading into winter here in New Zealand so plenty of time on my hands to spin spanners!

I need to replace the ignition system, so took a look at the Dynatek website. The website states that coils are available for the 650 but not a signal generator. When I looked at other models (550, 750, 850 and 1000) both signal generator and coils are available. I emailed Dynatek support and they confirmed this to be the case.

Searching through previous posts on the forum I see that with a bit of modification, it is actually possible to fit a replacement Dyna ignition system. That's great news but can someone explain how the GS650 differs from the other models, and what modifications are needed to fit a Dyna S?

Perhaps there are alternative solutions that work better? I'm keen to get rid of the original ignitor if possible.

    Many thanks in advance.

My memory is faulty, so please search the forum for more information, but I think the problem with a Dyna S on a 650 relates to a pressure sensor behind the ignition plate, such that you have to profile the plate for clearance. A dremel or die grinder of some sort should take care of business.

Thanks Nessism, are you referring to the oil pressure sensor connection at the bottom? If so, it could be a relatively straight forward modification to the Dyna S plate.

As you suggest I'll do some more digging into previous forum posts to see what else I can find.

      Thanks again

I've been in contact with Dynatek - their support service has been great. They confirm the Dyna S can be used on the GS650 but requires some modification. They said the location of the oil pressure sending unit obstructs the Dyna S mounting plate. They also thought there might be a difference in the advance unit that will need consideration.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the advance unit on the GS650 and other models? Does anyone have experience overcoming this?

        Cheers
