rotor/flywheel puller for a GS1000..?
I 'm replacing the stator on my 79 GS1000S. I bought one along with a new R/R from Steve's Motorsports. Very nice people. Answered some very noobie questions I had. Basically walked me through the whole process. (Damn it, Jim. I'm a painter not a mechanic) As I was putting the stator cover back on the magnet literally snatched it out of my hands. As I was pulling it back off to reposition it the gear and shaft that connects to the starter drive also pulled out. Of course the thrush washer on the back of the gear got sucked into, I'm assuming, somewhere in the rotor area. For the life of me I can't find it, but it didn't hit the floor. I spent 2 hours looking for that washer to no avail. I have 2 real good motorcycle mechanic friends that say just to be safe, pull the rotor to make sure it's not in there. Sooooo..anyone have the correct puller for this engine that I could buy or borrow or rent with shipping charges both ways..? Any ideas on maybe an aftermarket one..? I checked Z1 and searched eBay but there's nothing specific for a 1000 engine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.1979 GS1000S,

IF you have the rotor with the big threaded hole in the center its just a 16MM bolt. I got a grade 8 from Fastenal and my impact gun does the deed.
EDIT...Didnt see the bike before. So yes its a 16 X 1.25 bolt to pull rotor. Rattle it a few times with the impact gun. if it doesnt just pop off tap the rotor with a chunk of wood a few times. The tension from the bolt coupled with a few whacks usually persuades it to come off, Washer goes against the cases when reassembling. And another tech tip. If youre worried about the crankshaft threads you can put some random bolt in first then the puller bolt wont actually contact the crankshaft directly. Remove dummy bolt once rotors removed.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Thanks for the tips, Chuck. Unfortunately, I don't have a rattle gun. The bolt head on the end of the crank holding the rotor in place is a 17mm. As an aside, I took an aluminum hack saw blade, bent the end of it so it would rest squarely on the back of the rotor and carefully "felt" along the back side and I didn't feel anything. Same for the big starter gear that I can turn clockwise with my hand and didn't feel anything attached to either side of it, also. Dang. For the life of me that washer is M.I.A.1979 GS1000S,

inside the stator cover slid under the stator? Ill throw calipers on my bolt next time im at the shop but my memory said its 16. I got the inflatable paint booth set up and theres pics in the apperance thread.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Success! My certified technician friends found the missing washer in about 20 seconds of looking. I looked for literally 2 hours and didn't see it. It did indeed get sucked into the magnetized area of the rotor. Charlie and my other friend Lee drove almost 100 miles to come and help me. including putting everything back together. Those guys are good friends. It was nice to see them after so long. Charlie and Lee haven't seen each other for 20 years. It's been several since I've seen either of them. We all used to work together at a Honda dealership back in the late 70's through the mid 80's. They still know their s--t . We hung out and got caught up talking about old times. A big sigh of relief and a big thank you to them and those who helped me here, especially to Storm who offered his puller.
