The solenoid is a relay, and the ground wire is for the actuation side.
You can get a proper manual and wiring diagram here...https://gsarchive.bwringer.com/Ed

It’s anyone’s guess what a previous owner may have done. The starter solenoid is typically grounded through its base plate. There should be a yellow/green signal wire coming from the start button. This will look like it’s pottted into the top of the solenoid. Then there are two threaded posts with nuts on the top of the solenoid. One of these should be connected to the battery’s positive terminal with a thick gauge (thicker than most others) wire. The other post should have a thick wire connected to the lug on the starter motor housing. What is the mystery black/white wire connected to on the solenoid and where is the other end connected?Rich

There is always one that comes from the harness & goes to a point near the solenoid. Personally I always run another wire back from the mounting screw to a ground point I create (Single point ground) that in turn runs back to the battery on a decent gauge wire. I do the same with any of those rubber mounted plates... install a wire back to that same point. It can avoid all sorts of issues.
