    Cdi repair - anyone ?

I have a gs1000 g and on testing worked out the cdi isn't firing the 2 inner cylinders or one coil. I've opened the cdi and it's very primitive electronics few resistors transistors.and diodes , has anyone repaired or refurbished one of these ?

    Cheers

I think POsplayr looked at one. It was very difficult because everything was potted in an epoxy so getting to the board level components was virtually impossible without damaging the board.....

What year is yours? If it's got the mechanical advancer it's a lot less hassle just to fit a Dynatech ignition (DS3 from memory) & be done with it.

I've seen good reviews of these from Europe too.. https://ignitech.cz/en/vyrobky

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

There isn't a Suzuki GS model listed there (nor a Yamaha XS11 which is why I looked)

            1980 Yamaha XS1100G (Current bike)
            1982 GS450txz (former bike)
LONG list of previous bikes not listed here.

The TCI Sparker is the one, and lock the mech advance up.

I deal with an outfit called Radwell at work. They have repaired many very high tech gas turbine control boards for us. You might get them to have a look at it

Dude! It's a 40+ year old motorcycle ignitor. Those guys would charge thousands to just look at it! A Dyna-S is less than $200.

The one on my 1980 was encased... I guess the 79's they didn't do that.
You could try changing the components out till you find the bad one... likely a capacitor but how valuable is your time?

Thanks for that, I'm going to send them an email and see what else I need, like pickup coils. They look to be considerably less than what I saw from Sachse.

They mention they can either use your own pickups or supply ones that will fit - in those cases where they don't know for sure, they're really cooperative about finding out and making a change to use your pickups if necessary.
I doubt if they're unfamiliar with Zuk pickups by now, though.
They'd have been next on my list if the China Dyna hadn't come through - and if it craps out, I'll be getting one from them anyway.
I'll see how long the Chyna Dina lasts.

I'll have to look into both Zuk and China Dyna. Don't think there's anyone wrong with my CDI, it's the pickup coils that are the issue on the XS since they're made of ultra fine stranded 18ga wire with silicone insulation in order to flex when the timing plate is moved via the vacuum advance. Needless to say those wires break and there's no replacements available other than buying a used part and hoping you end up with something better than you already have. There's an ad on eBay right now for a set of NOS coils with a buy it now price of $750! Needless to say I'd like to just bolt something in place without the advance and never have to deal with it again, let the CDI take care of the advance.

All that might be true, but... he did ask about getting it repaired. For all I know, he's one of those guys who is concerned with the color of the thread used to reupholster his seat for the Concourse de Elegance and wants his bike to be as OEM as possible without adding aftermarket stuff.

DYNA was mentioned in the 1st, 2nd AND 3rd reply. I was giving him options for what he really ASKED for, rather than parroting DYNA squack DYNA!

                              Thanks all,

I have decided to get a dyna kit and as mentioned above loose the cdi and old existing pickups. Bike is going to be chopped up and modded as its far from a good base to fully restore then use and enjoy her .
