    ignition/charging issue cheap neglected '83 GS 850

    Ignition system/charging system

ok guys I'm having a problem with a cheap neglected 83 GS 850 I just bought for $400. it was advertised to "run great" just needed a clutch lever and a battery, which I borrowed off my 08 gsxr 600 that's down until parts show up. Definitely not the right size battery but it's close and should be enough to get it home. The first problem started about 3 minutes after I bought it, but was an easy fix. Someone had syphoned out the gas tank and it was bone dry. then after pushing it to a gas station. I made it almost 2 whole traffic lights before it sputtered out and discovered the battery had drained enough for it not to start hhhmmm. find someone with cables and let it sit and charge for about 10 minutes before I start it up and when it first cranks it sticks to a pretty high idle for a while but I let it run for a minute to see if it's gonna hold charge or die out. It holds charge for few minutes and finally kicks the idle down. so I throw on my backpack push it back out of its spot and throw it in gear...... it doesn't make it 3 feet and dies. At this point I'm resigned to having to push but want to do it for the shortest distance I can so I charge it back up and ride another 1/2 mile until it dies. I push it for a while until I get to the bridge which I can't push up and over so I get someone to charge me up again with cables and take off over the bridge. But when I got to the bottom it never died again, it made it fine all the way back home, and when I got home and shut it off the battery was fine to crank it back up........

There does also seem to be an issue with the plugs not giving a strong enough spark it's got kind of a lethargic acceleration except when on 3/4 to full throttle, once past around 5000 rpm it gets sudden jolts of good spark but the rest of the power band it's on its face.

Please forgive the sacrilege involved in my beater bike practices. I do have plans to get everything working as it should with parts that belong but for now I need to work with whats on hand. If I can pull off a week with what I got I'll throw a parts book at it and take care of it all the right way. I am pretty handy and have rebuilt a few bikes before. Tomorrow after work I'm peeking into the charging system and ignition coils with my volt meter. Any advice or ideas welcomed. Thanks
