Wiring for gs 650e dyna s
So i finally ordered a dyna s knockoff for my bike affer discovering that my cdi isn't working right. I had found a post that said it was a pretty simple install but so far im completely confused by the wiring. What i had assumed i needed to do was take the black and white wires from the dyna s and connect them to the corresponding wires in the plug that the original pickups went to. The connect the red wires to an orange 12v on the bike. But looking at everything the black and white wires go from that plug through the cdi box then to the coils. For some reason i thought the dyna s REPLACED the cdi. What am I missing? Can anyone give me a detailed rundown of what i need to do here?Tags: None

We can't tell you want to do because you bought a knockoff, not a real Dyna S. Doesn't it come with instructions?
BTW, your bike doesn't have a CDI. No GS bike does. You have an electronic ignition that uses magnetic signal generators and an ignitor. The Dyna S unit replaces both, and uses the stock coils.Ed

The Dyna/Dyna copy is a replacement for points but can replace a factory ignitior/CDI.
The Original cdi system would have to be removed entirely and replaced by the Dyna.
The wiring for the Copy is the same for the original Dyna.
The red lead from the dyna needs a switched live and the lead from each pickup goes to a 3 to 5 ohm ignition coil.
Pics would help as your bike may already have had an aftermarket electronic ignition fittedin the past.Mikuni Viton Choke Plunger Seat Renewal.

Zed the bike was bone stock except for a k and n filter and fairing. It was my dads bike and has sit for 20+ years. I gotta figure out how to get the sizes down on my pictures. I was looking over the wiring diagram and i think i see where to tie in to go around the ignition but theres still a few wires that will be left going through it. Again, I was really hoping someone could show me exactly where i needed to tie in as my elecric skills are severely lacking.

The Dyna S installs the same for all GS bikes. Follow the online instructions. With the 650, the ignition plate will have to be notched to clear the oil pressure switch.Ed

Well everything I have found on the online instructions have been for bikes with points and not with the electric ignition. Yes, they all seem to install the same way mechanically. But theres no plug and play wiring when you have the electric ignition and thats where I need the clarification. The instructions litterally say "connect the black and white wires to the recepticles where the original points connected". Which on MY bike is going through the stock electric ignition.

Dyna S install instructions have this image. Bypass the old harness and tap the power at the coils.

Those with electronic ignition that still employ a mechanical advancer can be changed to a Dyna 'S' but in all cases the Dyna is a stand alone system and any existing ignitor or cdi has to be discarded other wise the Dyna will not work or will be damaged.
The attached image is a pic of an advancer from a GS650 with stock electronic ignition.
If this is the same as yours then the Dyna conversion will be possible.
Also if your machine has electronic ignition as stock then the coils will very likely be too low a resistance ( usually around 2.2 ohms ) for the Dyna and will also need replacing if the conversion is successful.
The Dyna must have coils between 3 and 5 ohms or the Dyna and coils will be damaged.

I've have a knock off installed on my GS1000 engine after cooking a Dyna unit and a coil.
DO NOT leave your key on while testing - or unplug the ignition - or you'll cook yours like I did mine.
3 wires - red white black - what I did was run a seperate relay for power to the coils and ignition and used the factory power wire as the switch wire for the relay. During testing, I pull the fuse to prevent small fires LOL.
12v + Power - red
White - left coil 1-4
Black - right coil 2-3
I used Katana style 4.3 ohm coils for electrical reasons. 3 ohm coils strain your charging system and can help cook your new pickup. Your stock coils wile be fine and you can run them with or without the spark plug caps.
I don't care what anyone says, so far my knock off works fine - not everything revolves around Dyna.

1977 GS750 (710 is getting closer)
1998 Kawasaki Voyager - selling
1998 Chevy C2500
1999 Rav4
