    1979 gs stator question

Hello folks quick question i had an issue with my stator so found one on; line. . as you can see the new one has 5 wires the old one has 3. I am guessing that the 3 white with tracers are windings, so what are the 2 yellow wires about ? i have been pouring over wiring diagrams but no joy so far, any info would be great. my bike is a 79

I believe you bought the wrong stator. All GS stators(TTBOMK) have only 3 wires. Could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time. Buying a used stator is never a good idea. It's one of the first things to go on a GS. There are a multitude of reasons for this, which you can read about in the archives by doing a search. Notable known good manufacturers of quality replacement stators are Caltric, Rick's, and Electrosport. There may be others. When buying a new stator, be sure the vendor not only matches your year/model, but also the number of poles - either 12 or 18. Another member recently ran into this trouble as apparently, according to his posts, Suzuki changed from 12 to 18 mid-model year. Rotor magnets must match the stator windings.

Thanks for your reply/ it is an 18 pole, its definitely Gs so somebody out there knows where those 2 yellow wires go, I have a 79 850 stator that's a different size but i think that if i changed the casing and the rotor it would go on as the taper is the same, and the sprag clutch,
I have never seen a 5 wire stator either !

could you post a picture of the stator itself ? including the cable ?
I can't add any help but very interested in what the internals are ? I genuinely would like to know too what these additional wires are ....

(iv seen a 5 wire Regulator as I have one (in spare) that uses a sense wire)

Only ones I've seen with five wires have a pole that's replaced with an ignition trigger, which is where the extra two wires connect to.
None of the GS engines that I know of have that, except possibly a GS 125 single (just guessing).

Five wire stators are common on the - i'm guessing here, the early 8v engines. the extra wires aren't important and really shouldn't be used.

The extra wires on mine went to the lighting circuit and the shunt - the little box under the battery not the rectifier. The shunt could also be tied into the rectifier harness and the 5th wire was blank.

I've switch to the SH775 regulator and removed the 2 extra wires from the stator and only wired in the 3 white wires.

Just a quick update wired the three white tracer wires as normal, taped and ignored the two yellow wires, fired her up and got 14.8 volts when blipping. didn't do it for long just to see if it was charging ...so fingers crossed i I am all good. thanks for your help folks.

So a very cool man in the states...who owns a GS100 with a five wire stator explained it like this ...there.are 3 wires coming from the stator windings, then 2 of those 3 wires split inside the pigtail to create a total of five...so ....if that helps anybody, ...thanks to Ward, who took the time to investigate and reply to a speculative email sent to his you tube vid.
