    IGNITION TIMING, Stock Signal Generator Installation

    Hello,

    It's been about 8 months since I've been on here. That being because this site really helped me get my 750 back on the road! However, I have a new issue that I've been stuck on and looking for any advice or help.

    I had to remove the stock signal generator, on my 81 GS750E, while doing some electrical work. Everything when back together perfect, but I think the timing is now off for the signal generator. I've tried finding a PDF or a video showing the timing procedure, but it's always for the DYNA S Ignition upgrade.

    I need installation instructions for the stock signal generator (electric, not the points unit). I need to know the timing marks procedure using a test light etc. It only has the timing marks for cyl 1-4, but no marks for 2-3. Am I to assume that I'd only need to do timing for 1-4, and that would also set 2-3, on the stock signal generator?

    *When I try to turn the bike over, just intermittent load popping.

    You need to set the timing using a (Xenon) timing light. Connect the timing light to the cylinder number one sparkplug lead. Check the ignition against the the 1.4 timing mark line closest to the line marked "T" (TDC) at idle.

    More important is the timing at full advance which should be reached by at least 2750 rpm as this effects performance from this rpm until redline. Anything below 2750 is essentially idle speed and where you spend most of your time is above idle. So ensure the furthest 1.4 mark from "T" lines up.



    If you need to adjust, slacken off the 3 screws on the pickup mounting plate and rotate the plate until aligned

      And be aware.. the Ignitor boxes do go bad, usually the pick-up sensors don't. There are some tests for the boxes in the Clymer manual.

      One reason the ignitor boxes go bad is the RR going bad and putting out 17+ volts & frying it. The 750 have a particularly bad stock RR.....
