    Ignition and charging system refresh.

    Hey guys, I have a 1980 GS 850g. The accessory electrical system has been upgraded to an munit blue( this is how I bought it as a non-finished project) The ignition and charging system is unaltered however I have been having some issues as you may have seen in my previous post regarding both charging and ignition circuits.
    Looking at these I'd like to replace them and start fresh.
    This is a budget bike that I bought for 1000 dollars.
    Unfortunately I don't have the finances to buy a higher end kit if parts (saving for a house and have kids expenses this year that are eating into my cash flow) so I'd like to get an affordable set that will do the job for the next 12 months til I can replace with a good quality dyna kit.

    If anyone has any experience or a list that they'd suggest I'd love to look at it.
    I'll need, stator/generator, ignition circuit included coils, ignitor, pulse generator etc.

    It's unlikely that you need all those parts. Have you done proper testing to see what you really need?

    Check charging voltage across the battery at 5000 rpm. You should have 14 - 14.5 VDC.
    Check spark by putting a plug in each spark plug boot, grounding the plug against the engine, and hitting the starter. Watch for a spark.

    Once you identify the deficiencies, you can formulate a plan of attack for each.

      I agree that I probably don't need them all right now but almost all of them are the factory original parts. They also all test fine and the bike runs perfect for 30 mins to an hour before starting to show ignition issues. This has made it very difficult to pin point the actual fault as as soon as I get it in the garage to test, the issues subside.

      Spark is good and charging voltage is in spec until the bike warms up.
      ​​​ive rebuilt the brakes, accessory wiring and carbs and I just think it's time to say goodbye to the 40 year old remaining parts.
