5 ohm were used so they didn't melt the points. You can use 3 or 5 with the 80 electronic ignition. The stock coils are 3 ohms.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

I think the stock coils are more like 4 ohms, but yea, you can use from 3-5 ohm without worry.Ed

You are right, "more is better", but you had better make sure which "more" you want.
It is current flow through the coil that sets up the magnetic field which, when it collapses, makes the spark for the plugs.
What you want is more current. More resistance (ohms) will reduce that current.
