    reversed Coil wiring

Is it possible for a bike to run with the coils wired switched. left on right right on left not the plug wires but the wires coming from the ignitor. I replaced my coils, plugs and caps and cylinders are correctly wired. it will start right up but I had to adj the throttle to keep it idling I went for a test ride it stalls going up hills and wants to die if i give it to much throttle in acceleration. I just had the carbs cleaned and cleaned out the tank and petcock filter I am going to put good gas in it tomorrow and see if that helps but i was wondering if the coils being possibly reversed would allow the bike to run (roughly) only other thing I can think of is valves need adj.The charging system is ok

They are colour matched. Orange/White goes to BOTH coils, that feeds them power. One coil gets a white wire, the other gets a black. They must match. These are the trigger wires, that tell the coil when to fire based on the ignitor/signal generators position relative to the crank (or vice versa) If you mix these up, the bike PROBABLY wouldnt start at all...

+1 can't see how it would run at all.

Are all of your pipes getting hot? What coils did you replace (stock), and with what? Sounds more like a fuel issue to me. What do you mean by, "had the carbs cleaned"? Does that mean you did not do it yourself? What about a sync?

I didnt think that it would run at all or nearly as good as it did if I had the coils wrong but I thought I would ask I had a friend clean the carbs for me all he did was clean the bowls and main jets he said they were spotless I dont think they are the problem anyway I think it is a fuel flow issue i cleaned out the tank and petcock alot of big rust on the petcock screen I am going to put new High test gas in it now and see if this helped i am also replacing the fuel line I will repost later

Ok I put the new fuel line on and put good gas in and it is still running poorly the 1st and 4th cylinders are getting really hot and the 2nd and 3rd are barely hot at all About the coils I replaced the stock coils with Emgo Coils from Denis Kirk They look and fit just like the stock coils and were an exact match on there website

My bike will not run at all with the coil wires switched. Just did it a day or two ago. The plastic connector from the loom to the plastic connector from the coil was losing connection I was getting intermitant power to the coil. I switched them just to see what would happen.

The 'Orange/white tracer' wires should be getting 12v. If not, it might have these symtoms.

Solution for this, if not seeing 12v, is usually a "coil relay."

If this is in check, and there is 12v at the coils it could be the timing advance not working also. It would run at low RPMs, but have trouble at higher RPMs.

              So, I have read.

Well, 2 and 3 run off of the same coil, and since you just changed it that would be #1 suspect to me. was the bike running OK before the coil replacement? You also really need to get your fuel system in order. BTW, premium gas is probably not going to help at all - it's just harder to burn. Forget the float bowls and main jets. For starting you need your idle circuit, pilot jets and choke to be clean. Is there still rust and/or dirt in your tank?

I'd dip the carbs for 24 hours and replace the o-rings. Bench sync them while you're at it. Make sure the petcock is not clogged and is operating properly, without dropping gas down the vacuum line. Since 1 and 4 are firing, check the primary and secondary resistances of both coils and make sure they're close. Also as mentioned make sure you're getting ~12V at both coils.

There wasn't anything wrong with the carbs before my right side coil blew up just figured that I stirred up sediment when I removed the tank. The 2 & 3 cylinders are not firing at all... I checked all 4 with a spare plug and only 1 & 4 are firing... now wondering if the ignitor is shorted and if that is what caused my old coil to blow up I will investigate more in the morning
