    RR output question...

Well, I'm getting seriously close to putting my Big Red 1100EX on the road

Finally going through the entire wire harness & replacing bad connections and cleaning EVERYTHING. I even disassembled the ignition & handlebar switches to do a proper inspection & cleaning...

When I rescued this poor girl last Summer, I noticed the stator/RR connections were burnt, along with a semi-melted connector under the tank.

Pretty much got everything fixed, but I'm wondering if I have a bad RR.

    Electrical issues ain't my thing...

I checked the stator output & it seems fine; around 20V at idle, ramping to 85-90V at 5000 RPM.

However, when I check the voltage at the battery it's 15.4V at idle, and then drops to 14.4 at 5000 RPM.

So there is the question - is normal? Or am I looking at a bad RR.

    Thanks,

    Mike

It sounds like you have a heavy duty stator putting out higher than normal voltage. That is causing a higher than normal R/R output. I have some questions:

1.) Did you change the stator? What kind?

2.) What R/R do you have?

3.) What are the voltages from Steps A2 and A3 in the revised Stator Pages?

      Hi Jim,

I don't know anything about the stator or RR, other than they were on the bike when I got her...

I can tell you the wire colors from each do not appear to match the wiring diagram from the manual.

The 3 stator leads are all black, the manual appears to assign them each a different color.

Haven't used your revised checks as of yet - just did a quick voltage check per the manual. I want to take her out for a test spin & essentially do a shake down cruise, as I haven't yet ridden this one.

At the moment I'm filling/bleeding the F&R brake lines - I've rebuilt all the calipers & MC and replaced all the lines with SS ones. Once I have brakes, I can test ride her !!!

I'll do the other checks per your revised stator papers later today (I hope) & report back.

      Thanks

Is the RR grounded straight to the Battery - post ? I would do that. It may help stabilize the regulated voltage and prevent the battery from overcharging and boiling out the fluid.

Yes, I've already run a dedicated ground to the RR - learned that trick a couple of bikes ago...

Sounds similar to the RR I had on my 750... Similar phenomenom with the voltages. I would change the RR.

I can send you a known good one off a GS1000 if you want to try it for a check..

The factory Suzuki manual allows up to 15.5 volts, but I don't think this is ideal. Sounds like the R/R is overworked and/or tired. It's never a waste to upgrade to something more modern like an FET model.

Ya know, I checked the voltages again & they were lower. I will keep an eye on it for know...

                    What's an FET model RR?

I have a Honda one fron Duaneage on the way for my 850GLZ, that one's putting out low voltage and the bike struggles to start after riding.

14 gauge is more than enough but overkill doesn't hurt either.
