Is this hole supposed to be there?
I took my right side case cover (the one with the stick-on emblem over the signal generator) off to polish it. I was surprised to find out there is a round 3/4" hole in it under the emblem that centers over the nut that you use to turn the engine over. Is this previous owner creativity or are they made that way. It's not a necessary hole to provide clearance for that nut and I doubt you could get a socket thru it and who would want to be constantly taking off emblems anyway. The signal generator assembly looks new as if the previous owner was in there. Thanks Jim M

Surprisingly, that hole did not come stock on the bike
I tipped my 78 over and broke that cover in about 1981 and went and got a new one, that came with the hole
I think it's there to make you buy the emblem1978 GS 1000 (since new)

MY '80 850GL and the '81 850G parts bike I bought have the hole in the cover. They're both stock, replacement covers as far as I can tell.
