    Motogadget Feedback

    Eventually, once I get another rider, I'll be looking to take the 1100 down to the frame for stripping, bracing, and powdercoating. During this time, I'd like to simplify the wire harness as much as possible, along with switching to LED lighting (except the headlamp, of course). I was looking at the M-Unit, from Motogadget. Here's a pic of one installed on something:

    Seems pretty handy. If it does everything it says it does, it fits the bill perfectly, for what I envision for my bike. Can anyone seen any obvious cons that I'm overlooking? Obviously, it's quite expensive. But then, being young, single,and debt free has it advantages.

    I think that is a slick unit and would add alot of nice features. However, I don't really why you would want to "simplify" your harness; I'm assuming you mean to do a complete rewire job.

    Personally what I would do given your motivation, is to buy a new OEM harness that is still available and remove the electrical tape starting at the connections that go to the fuse box. From here you ca nstart isolating the various circuits (ignition, horn, lights, etc) as well as the respective grounds.

    This device allows to to separate all of those circuits out and drive them individually from the FET controlled electronics box. After getting everything separated, wrap the harness back up and install this new device in place of the starter relay and fusebox. Katman found an RFID device for startup so you can go even further.

      I see one flaw.

      When it goes "Phfffttt" and the smoke comes out you will have nothing.

        Well he is "young, single and with debt free" so he will buy two of them as he will need a spare.

          Good point, something I had considered. Motogadget seems to have a pretty good reputation in the U.K. (at least for their awesome gauges), but as with all things electronic, there is an element of chance in even the best pieces.

          Good idea. I love having something to fall back on. It sort of feels like the beginning of a hoarding problem though. I mean, why not keep a spare front end around. And hey, swingarms aren't that expensive. Quick, someone lock my debit card up!

            Oh, Motogadget does one of those as well! It's pretty slick as well. They have little glass tubes about the size of a grain of rice that you can sew into the fingertip of a glove. I was looking at something like that as well, since I'll probably need to re-locate/remove the ignition lock to mount the gauges I want.

            Good thinking on the OEM harness. I can probably modify mine, since it's completely stock, and still in great shape. However, I think I'd like to keep it in storage for the unlikely event something goes horribly wrong with the installation. Are they readily available as a OE parts fiche-type item? Or is Ebay the place to check?

              The 82 harness is avaliable new for about $150. Good investment but still needs some power and grounding mods between fusebox, R/R and battery.

              It is a minor turn control unit mod for the device near the solenoid to convert between 82 and 83 but that is not your issue.
