    Help me!!! Please!!!

    Ok ladies and gentlemen,

I'm seriously running out of options and ready to call it quits on my 1980 GS 550. I can only get cyclinders 2 and 3 to fire, 1 and 4 do not.

I'm on my 3rd set of coils, including orginials, and still the same result every time. I'm getting current to the coil for 1 and 4, its the same amount as 2 and 3, but still nothing.

If anyone has any other options please let me know, I'm losing hope...

assuming you have not been burning out the coils and replacing them
can you not swap the coils and see if the problem moves or continues to affect the same cylinders?

there is a fairly comprehensive post on coild diagnosis on here try a search it should be fairly easy to find.

I would get a manual and check the specs on the components first
nit sure if basscliffs site has one for your bike but a good meter will save some swapping misery

            Hi,

Sometimes troubleshooting is a process of elimination. There is an ignition troubleshooting guide in the Electrical Odds and Ends section of my website. There's a service manual too. Please help yourself.

            Thank you for your indulgence,

            BassCliff

the trigger does not go bad unless its been busted from an accident.
i would say its your igniter.
if you want to take a drive sometime...contact me and stop by and plug one of my igniters in.

Well guys we got it running on all four cyclinders. Its just time for some fine tuning.

I was inside looking at the forum and my roommate came in and said "Get the air filter and fuel tank, we are idiots..." He never told me what we did wrong but it works now...

                  NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

We need to know what was wrong. Not so we can laugh at you, but so we can learn, too.

Well don't make fun of us too much... This is hard...

We had the coil hooked up and everything, EXCEPT the spark plug wires... this gave us no current to the spark plug. Once we put the boot on one and tested the other, we got a spark...

So apparently, the coil grounds itself through the other spark plug wire... lesson learned and the next time this happens I'll remember

                      Ha. Don't worry about it.

Once I was fine tuning my 750, I walked across the garage to grab a tool or something and the dang thing just died.........

...it took me about 10 minutes to figure out I ran it out of fuel.

funny things happen when you are tired and frustrated
often walking away and coming back helps

a lot of folks with network connectivity probs never check their cable before calling frantically for help
