    HEI conversion, any problems?

I was contemplating doing the HEI module conversion since my ignitor seems to have bitten the dust. Are those of you that tried it still using it? Any issues with reliability?

I have a couple Dist's at home to rob modules out of for the time being so I thought I may give it a try since it'll only cost a few bucks out of pocket

No good for you as your ignitor has electronic advance in it... The HEI mod is only good for people with mechanical advance.

Not sure if you can retro-fit one from an older model on the 700 either....

Any of the GS700's. The 83GS750E / ES is a straight swap. All the 16v ones (post 82) will work but some of the plugs won't match up. The 1100 16v may add a bit less advance than your 700 unit so you could lose a bit of performance but it will work.

You can also fit a Dyna 2000 kit as that has it's own electronic advance built into the unit too if you want to go new.

Dee - are you sure? Isn't that an 8v? If so I would expect the total advance to be about 4 degrees or so higher which could definitely cause him some problems.

Not sure if the Dyna 2000 would work on the 700 without a mechanical advance. Raymond at Dyna and RapidRay mention it in this thread. I had asked the question before.

Place your GS performance, tuning or mods related questions in this forum.

I have yet to check if an 1100 advancer will work on the 700 crank end. I look for an 1100 advancer ever so often, but at the moment it is on the bottom of the list. If it doesn't fit I bet I could make it fit. Even if I had to extend the trigger cover some.

I suppose this is what has to be done to an GS1150. Not sure if the 1150 has a mechanical advance.? But, Dyna online shows a (DDK3-2 or DDK3-2C*) to be compatable on an GS1150. Hmmm....

If it were a direct bolt up I'd have it done already. lol

I've seen ignitors come up on ebay usually between $150 to $250 USD. I had seen one one time with a complete wiring harness go for $50 or so..... Once. But, I'm sure that doesn't happen often.

if i rember corectly the later year hei mod i think its the 7 or so pin has some advance built in ( i think it was like the 92 or mid 90s ones)
the advance is not a curve though more like a step .. only like 2 or 3 diff timings from idle on up

I didn't think the 2000 needed any mechanical advance. With that said I wonder if it's a rotor fitment issue or a sensor fit issue... I can't see any other reason why it wouldn't work.

If you could get the mechanical advance from the 1100 to fit then you could run with a Dyna S....

I very much doubt that any car ignition module would pull enough advance for our bikes....

Looking at the parts off a schematic, looks to be a fitment issue. The oil sensor cut out on the 700/'83'750 and mounting screws locations as well. If compared to a 1150.

Babbits Online shows the 700E/ES ignitor unit being replaced with the ignitor unit off of the '82' and '83' GS850G and GS1100G series bikes.

It also shows the "signal rotor" or "signal generator to be the same as 83' GS750E/ES, 82'-83' GS1100G/GL.

                        But, then to make it all interesting the "generator assembly" for the;

                        85'GS700 shows "33110-09X50 (replaces 33110-31311) "
                        83'GS750 shows "33110-09X50 (replaces 33110-31310) "

and, 33110-09x50 says "Sorry but there are no results."

Good news is the ignitor unit itself is still obtainable.

                        GS700

                        IGNITER UNIT @ $388.27
                        32900-49420 (replaces 32900-31310)

                        (same) 32900-49420 (replaces 32900-31310)

Has anyone ever tried to repair one of these "newer" ones?

Not sure. It shows the 1150 ignitor to be specific to the 1150s, but yea, different advance would be my guess. How much or less?

Other than the "HEI" conversion, which pretty sure needs a mechanical advance, not sure if anyone has cracked open one of these to repair it.
