Well I popped open the one off my bike
Figured I have nothing to lose. I going to reflow the solder joints in case one broke.
Nothing looks obviously burnt, guess I could check the diodes and resistors while I'm in there too
Not sure what the big silver deal is

Well the resistors and diodes look fine, how do I check the d1071 transistors and the big silver thing (I know I use such technical jargon . lol)

From what I have read it is usually a diode that goes....
          1980 GS1000G - Sold
          1978 GS1000E - Finished!
          1980 GS550E - Fixed & given to a friend
          1983 GS750ES Special - Sold
          2009 KLR 650 - Sold - gone to TX!
          1982 GS1100G - Rebuilt and finished. - Sold
2009 TE610 - Dual Sporting around dreaming of Dakar..... - FOR SALE!

All the diodes seemed to check out ok. I reflowed all the solder joints. The transistors seem ok. I tried running a power and ground right to the ignitor box. Still nothing. My local salvage yard only has a pre83 unit.

              Ignition Advance

I find it hard to believe that advance can be built into the ignitor. How can you electrically make a spark happen before it happens? Retard the spark electrically, yes, but Advance it? Gene

Mind you I have never done it. Someone did it. Replaced the rotor with mechanical advance unit - machined down to fit in the end of the crank and retrofitted a dyna III. Need to modify the cover too. Not sure if he redrilled the plate mounting holes?
I would think it is possible, retro fit the advance unit and the signal generator from an older model for use with the HEI conversion.
I would just verify the timing with a light...

I would check the transistors Those D1071's mounted on the heat sink. Check them like a diode

it would just be a setting to set a threshold and alter the spark timing after that threshold is passed

i think the advance is two settibgs not any sort of curve

Here is what the manual shows.

                    lol

How many points do you need to make a curve? Might not be a pretty curve, but ya know..............

I think I have read that someone has done it as well, not on a 700 me thinks, but it has been done on a different machine.

Thanks for the pics on the inside of the box, both sides.

You get this fixed yet Vista?

There's an ignitor on the bay a little less than what I normally see them go for.

You seemed to say everything checked out when testing.

                      Anyways here's the link.
