79 GS850 with the POS TSCM....

I have been reading posts all day today about how to bypass this mess of a Turn Signal Control Module. I thought at first it would be rather simple, but little did I know, just how complicated they made this system. OK, here is what I know so far:
I jumpered the 4 pin plug, so when I push the Turn Signal Switch left or right, I get the turn signals to come on solid as long as I hold the switch left or right. When I let it go, the signals go out. That was the easy part.

What I do not understand, is how to get the relay attached to the circuit so it will flash the signals. I want to use the existing turn signal switch. I found the light blue relay control wire, in the 6 pin connector, I also found the Brown/yellow wire in the same connector, but of course when I connect them together, the turn signals don't work. After reading several posts, I am assuming I have to change a connection up on the spring loaded turn signal switch, if I am going to make this work.

I took the switch off the handlebars, and it does not appear to be very user friendly as far as getting into it. Has anyone modified one of these switches? If so how did you do it? There was a post by Big Al, I believe, and he stated he used double relays, and took the spring out of the switch. Big Al, if you are out there reading this, what was your secret, man?

Can the switch be modified by altering wires out on the harness itself, rather than taking a chance on screwing up the switch? There was talk of connecting an orange/yellow or brown/yellow wire with an orange one up at the switch itself to make the switch work. Something about connecting the cancel part of the switch (where you push the lever down to shut em off, I think this was the brown/yellow wire) with the orange wire on the center terminal of the switch or something to this effect. Can this connection be made out in the harness?

If I need to use double relays in order to make the switch work, that is not a problem either, just have to know how to do it. This is probably the hardest workaround I have encountered yet on this bike.

Thanks for any and all replies, I gotta believe someone out there has been able to make this work.

I must have read 30 posts about this subject, and still got no clear answer on how to modify this thing. I have looked at the colored wiring diagrams, but for some reason I might as well be reading Chinese, they don't make much sense to me.

Thanks, again for any help with this.

If I remember rightly... If you put an electronic flasher on it then the auto stuff no longer works and they just behave like a on/off set...

I think the '79 system was a bit different. I don't know anything about them.

      How about you, SqDancerLynn1?

The 78-79 system is completely different from the later models. They Actually have 4 individual systems. That is why you need to connect the 4 prong plug. The switch itself can not be modified to work properly, will only work if you hold it in the on position. I have a switch from a GS750 on mine, I did have to rewire it... The orange wire from the TS switch goes back to the fuse block. Put the flasher in that line and it should flash

BassCliff, I read your article about bypassing the module, but on your bike, it is a 1980, and COMPLETELY different than my bike. I started realizing this when I bought the relay you recommend, and tried it on my bike and it would not work. A 3 pin flasher will not work on my 79, it requires a 2 pin flasher.
Also, the module itself is physically different, it has two connectors, the 6 pin and the 4 pin, where the 1980 version has only a single connector with on separate wire. So, it did not really help me very much, but I thank you for the link.

As far as having to hold the switch either left or right to make the signals work, that is not a problem, you can easily hold the switch on with your thumb, so I have no problem doing that, the problem is trying to get that switch to a point where the signals flash automatically while you hold the switch to the left or the right.

              Lynn,

Someday, if I get to know these bike just half as well as you do, I'll be a happy mechanic. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

How I fixed my 79 Suzuki and got rid of the TSCM

Guys, here is the answer you have been waiting for. I found an aftermarket switch that works perfectly to replace the stock GS850 handlebar switch. You do not have to hold the turn signals to make them work, they work from the single stock flasher, and it even has a headlight off switch included so you don't lose that feature.

I have a complete explanation on how to do this modification complete with photos and explanation of wire colors and how to hook everything up, but the problem is, it is 1meg in size (PDF file), and I don't think I can post it here, because the file size is limited to 19.5K. I would LOVE to share this info with the rest of the forum because I know there are others that want to get rid of this module on their bikes. I spent a total of $68 on the switch from Dennis Kirk (K&S technologies 21-0423).

Can someone please explain to me how I can post this information to help others?? I even included a photo of my GS at the beginning of the article.
                (GRIN!!)

Any help on how to get this thing where people can see would be appreciated. BASSCLIFF, how about you?? Would you be interested in adding it to your host of information??

                Thanks
