someone school me on coils and charging system
i have been trying to work out tuning issues with the carbs and then i started reading about how the electrical could be part of my problem. bike is running rich and no power up hills especially. i checked the battery voltage and load tested it and it is good at a little over 12 volts off the bike. when the bike is idling i am only reading 12.05 volts so i am assuming the stator is not doing it job and should be replaced (correct me here if i am wrong) also i checked the voltage at the orange wires on both coils and they are reading 10.5-10.9volts. here is where i am not sure what the fix is. should i just get new coils with the wires or what. also i have noticed that the insulated end of the wire for plug 2 gets a lot hotter than the others. still plugging away you guys have been great with the help so bring it on. thanks.Tags: None

Hi,
You've got a 30 year old wiring harness that needs all of the oxidation cleaned from all of the electrical connections, grounds, even the fuse box. Corrosion causes resistance which causes voltage loss and heat. This leads to lousy spark, melted wires, or worse.
Here's some schooling for you:
Read The Stator Papers. Read More On The Stator Papers.
And Mr. posplayr has provided a lot of information on the electrical systems of these bikes:

After cleaning your wiring harness, connections, grounds, fuse box, even the blinker stalks, if you're still not getting 12v at the coils you may need a coil relay mod.

After cleaning your wiring harness, all connections, grounds, fuse box, etc, be sure to run the ground wire from the r/r unit directly to the negative terminal of the battery. You can run it to a frame ground too, if you desire.
Replace critical bullet connections, like those in your charging system, with covered blade connectors and use some dielectric grease to protect the connections from water and corrosion.
Troubleshoot (i.e. The Stator Papers) before you start spending money on parts. Keep us informed.
Feel free to visit my website. Most of this stuff is collected there.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff
