    gs850 Fuse Question

Well when I got the bike everything worked..blinkers, brake light, horn, etc..

Now when I hook up the battery the fuse blows for the blinkers and brake lights.

The taillight and headlight work properly

I do not have the blinkers, horns, or fuel gauge hooked up.

The only thing I have done with the electrical system is clean up connections and apply di-electric grease.

Any ideas what happened or things to check?

If a fuse is blowing, you have a short somewhere. Look for pinched connectors, exposed wires ...etc.

I would also replace the connectors, found out the hard way this can safe alot of work and frustration. terrylee

Any chance you hooked a turn signal wire to a ground plug in the headlight shell? Some d u m b a s s did that on my bike after rumoving a Windjammer.

Man did I feel stupid when I found that.

I think it was a connector from the horn grounding out...

I had to dis-assemle the blinker switch (pain in the rear) But I cleaned that out good and tightened up a loose screw. I put it all back together and will put it back on tomorrow night!

I had some smoke out of the signal control unit... So once its all back together Ill see if everything works properly.

I did notice the front brake is touchy...I cleaned the contacts but doesnt seem to work quite right..?? Lots of play and have to wiggle it to get the light to turn off.

Once I get the brakes put back together maybe that will firm up the handle...

Turn/Brake fuse powers the org/grn wire.
Disconnect everthing you can find all over the bike that plugs into any org/grn wire.
Then replace fuse, and plug things back in one at a time, checking fuse each time.
Likley suspect is the horns. Keep in mind that (in stock wiring) that power goes to the horn without pushing the horn button. SO a shorted horn can blow the fuse without pushing the button. (The button completes the circuit to ground). But you said horns are disconnected. But if the org/grn wire is still connected, the horns can blow the fuse without having to push the buttons.
Other suspect is the indicator lights in the guages. If put a bulb in wrong and it deformes the contacts, the contacts can touch each other and short the power to negitive.

Tell us more what you find.

Later Note>>>> Oh, I see you posted again while I was entering this.

Right...when I turned the ignition on it blew the fuse...

However it doesnt anymore!! It was a horn terminal grounding out.

Now I am just going though everything else...

headlight works (hi/lo), brake light, gauges, gear indicator, neutral light.

I just need to get the blinkers sorted out...they dont seem to check out with my meter...
