Sidesatand light??

Hi,
My sidestand light is staying on even when the stand is fully up.

Any ideas what causing this? The small spring is okay, and I un-hooked it and adjusted the two nuts a bit to see if that would help but no luck.
Its not doing any harm really but it kind of gets to you while riding having that red light on the dash.

Sounds like your switch is toast. Could also be a ground issue.
You could check Basscliff's website for the factory manual for pictures, etc.

Old springs that no longer hold or bad/dirty connections are likely causes.

It shouldn't be that hard to test the switch. Disconnect the two leads off of the switch and put a continuity tester on it. Move the stand up and down and see if current flows when it's down, and stops with it's up.

Or, as an additional test of the system; while the wires are disconnected use a small bit of wire to connect the two wires that come from the wiring harness to each other. If the light comes on your system is good and the switch is bad.

A third thing...I don't remember for sure about the 1982 750 but on many models the side stand light and the oil pressure light are both powered by the same source. If there is no oil pressure both lights come on and there's a diode in the system (It's in a plastic wrap inside the headlight) so if the side stand light comes on only it will illuminate. I suppose it's a backup for the oil pressure...if one bulb burns out you'll still get something of a warning before you cook your engine. It;s possible, but very unlikely, that something is amiss in that wiring.

Test the switch first. That's most likely and easy to fix. If the light just annoys you, leave one of the connector wires disconnected. The system won't work but at least you won't have that annoying light on all the time.
