impressions of dyna coils + wires + a question...

actually this is just a question and I moved my impressions under product reviews...

My question is, is there any reason for me to consider doing the coil relay mod when I was already getting a solid 12.8 volts or so per coil? Would there be a performance gain at all in my situation by doing the mod?

If you have good voltage at the coils, then leave it alone.

if 12.8V is at 5K rpm when you are charging at 14.5 then you have close to a 2V drop. When cranking with a 12.8 V battery that would put you closer to 10V. So not sure when you measured that. Also what ever the voltage drop is it is a function of corrosion which is not stationary; it keeps growing. You might be marginal on your way to cut out soon

Coil relay mods are primarily to solve chronic voltage losses to the coils due to corroded switches and contacts and partially to long primary wires. If your bike is some how immune to these factors I would say leave it alone.

I tried the same because of full replacement of harness, ignition and right hand switch with NEW parts and still ended up with reduced voltage to the coil that caused hard starts on my GS1100ED within about a year. After the coil relay mod I don't worry about it any more. I do live on the coast where there is higher humidity.

        thanks guys for the input..

but im gonna raise my hand right now and admit that... "i dont know **** about electronics!" Yes I suck and if it weren't for this great website I would not be attempting to do any of this stuff and I would have ended up buying a modern bike long ago!

Anyway, here is what I did: I turned the ignition on, put the kill switch on Run. Used a meter to check the wires that ran up to the coils and they read 12.8 or so. My battery is a generic napa battery. I believe it was the stock replacement, 10A-2U or something to that effect.

So if i need to check it using a different method please let me know or point me in the right direction. I want to get it running as optimally as possible!!

        Thanks,
        Mark

sounds good; click the engine around a bit, the voltage should drop some because of the 3 or so amps that is being pulled .
