I was wrong the starter is turning clockwise, swapping the wires on the solenoid did nothing. The starter turns over and spins the idler gear and the flywheel? but the stator will not turn. I am wondering if there is something else wrong?I can move the crankshaft so the engine is not locked up.any ideas?

Facing the starter gear end, starter turns counter clockwise, unless my bike is a special ( or I'm still asleep).

Well mine is turning clock wise any sugestions. I have a different starter and will check it. I can hook the battery charger up right to it, and it turns the same way. If I hook up a volt meter ,cheap one, turn it on ohms should the needle go all the way to the right or do nothing? If I touch the probes together the needle goes all the way to the right. I put the + probe on the + starter post and the - probe on the case, the needle goes all the way to the right.

I am on the right track I think, starter was turning backwards because when wires on solenoid were switched and it just clicked. I thought must be turning the same way just was something else making it click. I removed the idle gear and it was turning counter clock wise. I am thinking starter doesn't have the ass to turn it or not enough juice getting to the starter. I hook it up direct and it would not turn over so I am thinking maybe the starter. I looked around at the wires but did not unwind any of the ,I'm guessing tape to look at everything, but no burned connections. The battery is almost new maybe a month old. I left it on the charger all night. I may take it back to walmart and have it checked. It is really hard to tell the voltage differences with my volt meter.

Nothing you do to solenoid will make starter turn backwards. If the starter is turning clockwise, the brushes or something got messed up during your rebuild. The starter should turn counterclockwise, which then turns idler gears clockwise, which then turns large flywheel gear counterclockwise- make sense?

It is doing that just not with the idle gear installed, and it was turning the other way. I am not sure why but still don't turn motor over. I will figure it out sooner or, well probly alot later but will keep on pluging away at it.
