will stator work
Does anybody or has anyone used a stator from a 79 850 in a 80 850. The Suzuki part numbers are #31401-45110 for the 80 and#31401-45011 for the 79. The thing is the picture on part finder of the 79 looks like what came out of my 80 850, and the picture of the one for the 80, doesn't. terryleeTags: None

Not positive but the '79 may be 12 pole. Normally if the stators interchange the parts numbers are in the same supercession chain.Ed

Yep, the '79 is a 12-pole, the '80 is an 18-pole, they won't interchange.
You will need to know which one you need, as the wrong one will give you absolutely NO output.
Are you sure it's an '80? Check the production date. Sometimes things got a little fuzzy in the transition from one model year to another, as some parts made it to the new model before others, or they continued using the last few parts before breaking into the box of new ones.

Count the poles.
If you have an 18 pole stator, the stator from lots of different models will fit. My '83 GS850 is currently wearing a stator from a 2001 GS500.
Here's a list -- click the brand names under "Streetbikes this stator is known to fit." Yes, it fits a whole bunch of Suzuki and Kaw models, as well as a few Yammies.
If you have a 12 pole stator, you're limited to the stators from the 1979 GS850G or the 8-valve GS750 (1976-79, I think). No one is making new 12 pole stators, although you could get yours rewound.
This guy has a couple of early GS750 stators he's billing as new, although I dunno -- they look sort of beat up.

Another option is to get a later rotor so you can go with a matching 18 pole stator. Shouldn't be too hard to find one.Ed
