1978 GS400 dumping point?

I would like to remove the points on this bike and go to an electronic ignition. The points seem to be $30 each and I am just not that "old school". I have looked around and not found much available of the old 400. Does any one know of a good write up on doing a custom set-up? Thanks for the help.

Points work just fine and can be had for about $10/set off ebay. If that just won't do, you can always pick up a Dyna S for about $120 from Z1 Enterprises (use google to find). If that won't do either then you might want to search out Matchless's thread about building a ignitor using GS HEI modules. You will still need the signal generators but those are easier and cheaper to find than ignitors.

I'm new here and new to old bikes, so thanks for taking time to help me. I have already emailed Z1 and they do not have the Dyna S for my bike any more, but they were very nice. And Ebay has been a total pain. I have 3 sets of the wrong points and places like Bike Bandit want $30+. Of all the points I ordered only one was the correct point. I am sure I was just dealing with the wrong sellers, so I will have to live and learn. I will be sure and check out Matchless's thread and look at Ebay for a high rated seller.

Do you need NEW coils if you get electronic ignition?

I didn't. As long as they are in the right ohm range. Stock coils are good stuff.

No. You can run points-compatible coils with an electronic ignition. You cannot, however, run electronic ignition compatible coils with points. The impedance is too low and you run the risk of burning something out.
