1978 GS400 dumping point?
I would like to remove the points on this bike and go to an electronic ignition. The points seem to be $30 each and I am just not that "old school". I have looked around and not found much available of the old 400. Does any one know of a good write up on doing a custom set-up? Thanks for the help.Tags: None

Points work just fine and can be had for about $10/set off ebay. If that just won't do, you can always pick up a Dyna S for about $120 from Z1 Enterprises (use google to find). If that won't do either then you might want to search out Matchless's thread about building a ignitor using GS HEI modules. You will still need the signal generators but those are easier and cheaper to find than ignitors.Last edited by Nessism; 07-13-2014, 10:03 PM.Ed

Nessism,
I'm new here and new to old bikes, so thanks for taking time to help me. I have already emailed Z1 and they do not have the Dyna S for my bike any more, but they were very nice. And Ebay has been a total pain. I have 3 sets of the wrong points and places like Bike Bandit want $30+. Of all the points I ordered only one was the correct point. I am sure I was just dealing with the wrong sellers, so I will have to live and learn. I will be sure and check out Matchless's thread and look at Ebay for a high rated seller.

No. You can run points-compatible coils with an electronic ignition. You cannot, however, run electronic ignition compatible coils with points. The impedance is too low and you run the risk of burning something out.
