    so yes..
known good box...plug it in and see if that fixes the problem.
    ok,
i'll let you get back to your quantum physics experiments now.
Yeah, if he had one lying around, try it. But if he bought one and things didn't improve- or worst , it got damaged,he would be ****ed. I think folks need to grasp basic troubleshooting skills. Thirty year old bikes aren't supposed to be troublefree.

there may be someone around here that will just give you one for the shipping price.
post something in the classifieds under "wanted items".

there are several models that take the same igniter as yours..
it would be nice if you could find someone local to let you plug there box and see if it fixes your problem.
      tom,
i posted the above on 8/24.
      it is now almost 8/30.
i don't see any positive progress made yet.
the box that fits his bike is the most common igniter out there.
would it not be simple to just plug a known good box in and see?
if my above original question/comment would have been responded to..
i could have already sent him an igniter..if it fixed his bike then pay me..if not send it back.
there's no reason to re-write a trouble shooting manual on this bike as i believe his problem is just a bad component.
this is my opinion and the only point i am trying to make..

Maybe it is the igniter -I don't know- and you were right from day one on this problem, what's the harm in approaching it in a simple manner- he might learn something and it ain't quantum physics. Progress? we haven't heard from him-maybe he's off riding already!

            tom,
my smart a$$ comments(quantum physics ect.. was quoted/pointed towards chef/bill as i seem to bring out the pricky-ness in people at times.
it was all in good fun..bill is ok for a white guy.
i have no idea if this guys igniter is bad or not.
just seems like a shame not to plug an igniter in and see if that fixes it.
