    gs1000 charging problem

    1981 gs1000 shafty
had charging problems so fitted a honda cx500 reg rec ,was told it was best modification ,was over charging to 18 volts ! checked wiring and bike has a red/white wire going to handlebar switch if connected to green / white wire voltage drops to 12.5 v what does red/white wire do ?and what does it go to ?
    any ideas?

On this 1981 bike, one of the three stator wires was (mis) directed to headlight on/off switch. Take that G/W wire and connect it into r/r just like other two stator output wires; then just tape up the R/W wire. The idea was that the stator would have a reduced output till headlights were on.The R/W was the return from the switch.

While you shoos remove the headlam loop check to see if the Honda r/r is a 6 wire. F it is hook directly to the battery as rest then do a search for switched source to connect to

            Greetings and Salutations!!

            Hi Mr. bignig59,

Normally, the green wire on the Honda r/r units is the ground wire. This is the diagram we normally use to wire in a "new" Honda r/r part.

This is the standard 6-wire Honda r/r unit we use to upgrade our bikes. The three stator output wires are connected directly to the three r/r input wires. The "sixth" wire is a "sense" wire that needs to connect to a 12v switched source to monitor the output of the r/r. The "sense" wire is usually black. Am I making any sense?

Anyway, I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.
