    This means I need a new starter right?

    Bike wouldn't start. I found this:






    When I opened it up it smelled cooked.

    Not sure. Can you figure out what was rubbing the coating off? Perhaps a magnet slipped out of position? Its basically a reverse electric motor, battery provides current, electromagnetic force causes the spindle to spin, cranking the motor...

      the coating was burnt off, I scraped the burnt stuff off to look at it. It is burnt at both ends of that wire. The rest of the starter looks fine.

        Test the commutator for Its described in the manual.

        hope this copy paste works:

        STARTER MOTOR INSPECTION
        CARBON BRUSHES
        When the brushes are worn, the motor will be
        unable to produce sufficient torque and the engine
        will be difficult to turn over. To prevent this,
        periodically, inspect the length of the brushes,
        replacing them when they are too short or chipping.
        Service Limit 9 mm (3.5 in)
        COMMUTATOR
        If the commutator surface is dirty, starting performance
        decreases. Polish the commutator with
        #400
        or similar fine emery paper when it is dirty.
        After polishing wipe the commutator with a clean
        dry cloth.
        Measure the commutator under cut
        CD.

        Service Limit
        0.2 mm (0.01 in)

        ARMATURE COIL
        Using a pocket tester, check the coil for open and
        ground by placing probe pins on each commutator
        segment and rotor core (to test for ground) and on
        any two segments at various places (to test for
        open), with the brushes lifted off the commutator
        surface.
        If the coil is found to be open-circuited or grounded,
        replace the armature. Continuous use of a
        defective armature will cause the starter motor to
        suddenly fail.

          That's ugly! Don't worry about what happenned, just get new/ used one - maybe someone on this forum sells them. Prices on ebay vary wildly- I think yours is a popular starter motor.
          Of course, when you put new starter in, make sure the starter clutch is ok.

              That one should work ! Make sure you starter clutch is working properly like in releasing...

                @JEEPRUSTY Thanks for the info!

                I did all the tests, it was all OK and I cleaned it up good. It turns but slowly like the battery is weak. I replaced the battery last weekend and cleaned all the connections between it and the starter. I checked the starter clutch and it seems to be working properly. I think I just need a new starter.

                    The commutator bars are rough but could be touched up by machining or otherwize, but the burnt places in the windings - you are not going to do anything about that and there are probably other places almost as bad. So it looks like the best use of that starter is for a "core".

                    Have you found the Stocker site for rebuilt starter motors? I have gotten rebuilt starters from them with good results. And I have also gotten replacement brush kits to rebuild some myself.

                      you cleaned up yhe commutator, cleanead and reassembled?

                      i dont think these spin very fast i think they rely on gearing to up the rpm to the crankshaft,

                      also you need a good battery and nice tight clean connections.

                      i think it burned cos of dirty commutator and brushes

                        In the first picture, you can see the hole where the smoke came out.
                        Probably not going to work anymore if some of the smoke is missing.
                        It's hard to put smoke back into anything, especially a motor.
                        I'd replace it.

                              I've got the stocker site bookmarked. I am likely picking up a parts bike tomorrow if I cant use the starter off of it I'll get one from them.
