    Charging question

GS850GL. At idle, 13.2 volts. Rev it to 4000rpm and it goes up to about 13.8 volts. Rev it to 6000rpm and the voltage drops down to 13.2 to 13.4. Is this normal?

    Charles.

Not normal, but common. The voltage should increase with RPM, not come back down. It's due to corroded or tarnished connectors, go through Posplayer's new stator papers, there is a pretty good description of the problem and how to fix it. Left as is, parts will eventually fry.

There is often a little inconsistency in the voltage rise, but that usually happens around 2000-2500 rpm, right as the regulator hits the target voltage and starts shunting current to regulate voltage. As you slowly increase engine speed, you will see voltage rise slowly to the regulated voltage, then drop a few tenths, but it will start climbing again if all is well.

That makes sense to me. I've noticed exactly the same thing on both of my GS's.

Thanks Highway, that was actually my plan. She'll be ready for a shakedown this weekend I hope!
