I need to update my previous post. It seems that my GS650G fried a stator at 20,000 km and popped the regulator at 25,000 km. I missed a re/re comment on one of the service orders and the cover gasket in the list of parts installed. I recall blowing a fuse on the way home from work and charging the battery to ride to the shop the next morning.

So now my score is 50% on Suzuki regulators and 100% on Suzuki stators.

        Those are failure rates right?

Did you vote in the poll for blown stators with OEM R/R?

Yes, those are failure rates. Two bikes, one fried regulator, two fried stators.

I voted on the blown stator poll.

I plan to give my Compufire a hefty workout this year. Painting and polishing is the only scheduled down time.

I vote on the compufire. I have the CE-602 right now. Works great. 13.8 V when the revs are up. Does not get hot. Fits nicely under my battery box. I have a GS1100G. The OEM rectifier sucked. Replaced 4 stators and 4 rectifiers.

I'm just curious about something. I have a set of Electrex RR and stator and at 1200 idle It climbs to 13.7 after a bit and shortly after 2000 it hits 14.4 and stays solid at that no mater what the rev's above that.

I just noticed that I see allot of people posting that they get 13-14 v only when reving and less at idle with the compufire.

How well will a compufire RR do against the Electrex ?

I'm in the "thinking about it"

On the typical GS's that I have seen they are a zero charging rate at about 1250-1350 RPM so the battery voltage will be right about 12.8-12.9V. Depending upon what R/R you have it can take about 1500 RPM to get 1 amp of charging current (e.g. 13V at the battery).

If you are at high 13V's at 1200 RPM I'm guessing the EL stator is wound differently to produce a higher voltage, but likely less current that the stock of Electro sport stators.

The charging voltage is also a function of the battery voltage. If the batter yis down the voltage will be lower.

Other than the stator winding (which effects voltage v.s .RPM characteristics) the R/R will effect the output voltage at low RPM. The FET type or Series type R/R's have FET's instead of bipolar switches/diodes so the internal drops are lower by about 0.5V (you only see this at low stator voltage output).

Cool, I'm going Fet as soon as this one dies, It seems completely stable for now though.

Hey Postplayer, A friend of mine has a GS450A and needs a new R/R. My question is, will other models of the compufire work for him? All of them seem to have enough capacity amp wise and unless they are the size of a brick, there should be enough room on the 450. Some of the ones on ebay are very inexpensive, but the wiring looks to be only 4 leads? I've tried to get an answer from compufire but no luck so far. Thanks, Ray

Only the one specified is 3 phase which is what is required

I've decided to buy a CE unit when a good deal comes along on ebay. Having read about all the charging system threads I have a question to ask. Someone posted that CE is one of the OEM suppliers to HD and even listed what models they're found on. With that in mind, doesn't it figure that all the r/r's on the listed HDs are series type regardless of who the supplier is and as such would work on our bikes? If thats the case, it will increase the availability quite a bit. Your thoughts?

It's a unit for an aftermarket upgrade... It's 3 phase. Stock Harley's are not 3 phase..
