Any 1 know Harley 883 Sportster Starters???
So I picked up a 1994 Sportster 883 that was burnt. I wanted to see if the engine is good. I tried to jump the starter to see if theres at least compression. I connected a positive terminal to this terminal see pic. And a ground to the bikes frame. The starter winds when I do this but the engine doesnt crank. Am I doing this right? Did I connect the positive terminal to the right posts? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The red circle is where I attached the positive cable from my car. See picTags: None

sounds like you may well be looking at a fried starter clutch then. I dont know what the starter cnnects to, but if its in the transmission, its possible the clutch is screwed up.

Put it on your bench and run the same test. See if the gear kicks out of the housing or stays in it. If not, the top part is bad. It can probably be replaced separate to the starter motor (the bottom part). Either way, if the gear rotates the motor is still good.

There are more terminals on the back side that cannot be seen in that picture.
It looks, and works, just like a GM starter. (after looking closer, it is a Nippondenso starter. Same principal.Does it have a remote solenoid?)
Jump the solenoid and see if the bendix engages.
