        99% of the 8 and 16 valve 4cyl. models have 3 retaining screws on the plate.
        if a person is going to go to the trouble use a dyna S and make if worth your wild.

          I don't remember how many screws hold my ignition plate, but I installed a Dyna S on my 16 valve this past summer. Works awesome.

            Fix your old CDI! Or, get rid of the 550. It is too small anyway! El G.

              Not too small for the knotted up back roads of Eastern TN. This is a great sized bike for around here. I have a blast on my R6, but even it has some pucker factor at times. I think that this little 550 will enjoy having it's neck wrung out. If I can get it road worthy!

                I think the 8v mech advance might pull too much advance for the 16v or maybe I have it the wrong way round.
                You could modify the stops to restrict or add more advance though and even change the springs if necessary to bring the advance in faster or slower....
                A Dyna 2000 could also be made to fit and has electronic advance curves for 8v and 16v on board plus the latest one are programmable.

                I would think you could also use the ignition from the 83-750 or the 700 models too but Dyna 2000 is probably cheaper and easier!

                  I dont know if this helps or not but the 16V and 8V mechanical advancers seemed to be the same at 20 degrees. Here is a bit of a confusing discussion of (16V/8V) interchange that might give you some ideas.

                                Wouldn't take a picture of the wire harness at the igniter box? I need to know the configuration of the colors/positions in the plug.
