STRANGE electrical issue....

Been out riding around in the beautiful sunny weather (thank you Seattle weather gods!) all day today. Trying to find fault with my work, and tie up loose ends before I sell it. Well, today when riding around I tried the obligatory rapid stop. Brakes performed perfectly, but the motor cut out....?? Started her back up and rode home. When I got back into the shop I tried to replicate at slow speed.

When I nail the brakes from a roll it dies. Now, I know every INCH of the electrical system and I know nothing is loose. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Is it dieing when you hit the brqakes, or is it dieing when you let off the gas?

Hmmmm...during hard braking of course my hand is off the throttle....so I don't know. It runs and rides fine other than hard braking. I imagine it to be electrical but couldn't say for sure. What are you imagining?

Maybe the idle is set too low? Just a guess as I had a similar problem.

Carbs overflowing during braking dumping too much fuel into the cylinder. Your floats are most likely too high, or the float needles are leaking.

This would happen so quickly??? even at slow speed? How about loose wiring at ignition switch or kill switch?

I will tear into the switch this evening and see what's up. I just had the starter button not work also. I bet the gremlin is in there....

I'll go the other way on the floats, I think they are too low and you starved it out when you hit the brakes, fuel sloshed too much..

Duaneage, Nessism, I agree it sounds like a fuel issue. I would lean (double entendre intended) toward a lean condition, but either way I would be pulling the carbs and checking them rather than trying to find an electrical issue.

I've also seen the engine stall if the clutch is not engaged during the stop, which could be the case. If you're in high gear and lock the rear wheel suddenly the engine will stall unless clutched from the transmission.

I was thinking still in gear also but I assume the clutch is pulled or bike in neutral, right? You made sure it wasnt in gear?

Clutch pulled, in both nuetral and in gear. I am probably not going to get out to the shop until tomorrow night to check it out. I'll mess around with both the switch and teh carbs then.
