It's normal until you hit the rpm where it kicks in. You should be running 1100RPM at idle anyway, and will notice it kick in when you increase several hundred RPM. If it really bothers you, feed the battery directly with the compufire, and do a headlight relay mod.

They are not that bad. A two cylinder section of a radial aircraft motor designed in the twenties.
