    1979 550e (quick) question

Does anyone out there have a quick answer for me? I just picked up a 550e and there's a wire coming off a fuse that I am not sure where to connect to.

If someone has a 1979 550(e), could they look at (or take a picture) of what this fuse is supposed to be connected to? I seem to be missing either the in or out wire and I'm not sure what the other is supposed to connect to.

I've attached 2 photos. One with the fuse covers on, and one with them off. I've circled the wire that I do have (which doesn't appear to be stock all the way).

fuse covers on (link incase this pic doesn't display here)

fuse covers off (link incase this pic doesn't display here)

    Thank you all

I've never seen a set up like that. The wire looks like it goes it goes to the positive battery terminal, but considering the non stock look of the wire I'd do some more research before hooking it up.

The battery is on the opposite side of the bike, so it seems as though it is maybe supposed to connect to the starter relay, but all 3 wires already seem to be on there...

I should clarify... when I say "not stock," it looks like the red wire was stock, but someone put a beefier red wire on the end on it (judging by the electrical tape midway down the wire).

It looks to me like the single fuse box is non-stock since all the functions on the larger box are there. The single fuse may have been added for an accessory. I could be wrong though since I'm really not familiar with your model's electrics.

Just looked at the factory service manual and apparently that upper fuse box is a factory part called the "Power Source Terminal". After reading this it seems it's an accessory panel so that red wire goes to the battery (if you need to hook up any accessories that is).

It might not be stock, but it certainly LOOKS stock (definitely of the time period).

The mount is molded to the airbox (see pic) and the actual fuse box has stock-looking mounting hardware (including a little nub that rests in the airbox molding to keep the fuse box straight). Not to mention that there is a PERFECT little space in the shape of the fuse box in an otherwise crowded mess of cords and mounted hardware.

Pic of back of fuse box and mounting arm here

I should have mentioned in the first post that all the electronics EXCEPT the starter work fine. This leads me to believe the mystery fuse has something to do with the starter circuit. The plugs are even getting spark (from the kick start). I still need to poke around with a multimeter to see if a) the starter switch works and b) if the starter relay is receiving any current.

Anyone have a 550e that they could verify if this is or is not on their bike?

As mentioned, the box is in the service manual. It's for accessories. Basscliff is offering you a free download so please check out the wiring diagram in the manual for yourself.
