    Re-wire '82 GS650

I got a '82 GS650 last summer. Bike has ran great until now...I have the problem narrowed down to one of these 3 things so far the R/R, Stator, and or bad wiring. I say bad wiring because the kid that had it before me had done some make shift wiring on the bike. He said he re-wired about 70% of the bike because a lot of the old wiring was fried. However further investigation; this thing is a F$*%ing mess! So I want to re-wire the bike, any body ever done this? I am a competent mechanic, but I know wiring harnesses can be a huge PITA. Any insight on this? Thanks!

Yeap, Look at the other threads on re-wiring. Its not too difficult. Go to http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/ and start there. Lots of info there. Also there is a link to reconditioning your harness. Hope this helps. I did it last summer, but have no pictures. Wasn't too difficult, just messy when you are peeling off the old tape.

Welcome and yes it would be a great idea to check out his site for some of the manuals you'll want. Have you also done all the other work like verifying the battery is good, all fuses are good, carbs cleaned, valves adjusted and such? If so, at least you'll rule out a good portion of problems before they start.

And of course, pictures would help of the bike. Where are you located so in case someone is close by they might be able to help? Would be a good idea to throw that in your profile and your bike type in your signature so it shows up without you having to type.

Have you looked on E bay for a used one? I've have seen some there recently for your bike.

Just so you know he has a GS650E.Not sure a G harness would work.Very similar bike but not the same. Here's his other thread: http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...d.php?t=170739

@ Cowboyup, yeah I just started realizing everyone else has the bike pic and details come up, I'm going to fix that. Well I think getting a used wiring harness for a good price sounds good to me. Mechanically the bike is awesome, just electrical crap keeps coming up, probably because I live in the rainy NW (Seattle). Seems to me electrical issues arise more for us folks up here.

Absolutely, don't mess with someone else's wiring nightmare- unless you're very bored. They show up all the time on ebay, just try to get one for your year as there were a few minor differences.

I think I'm good know, duaneage has one that I believe will work. Thanks for all the tips! Yeah Seems way better just to start completely over instead of messing with all these tangled messed up weird wires this guy put on this bike.

When you get the harness , cut off ALL those stupid bullet connectors and replace them with spades . Many future electrical problems will never arise .
Especially , get rid of the bullets on your stator wires .

                    Cheers , Simon .
