What year 450's and 500's are you referring to? The ignition setup changed dramatically from the '82 to '83 model year and Suzuki went to electronic advance with a completely different signal generator.

My guess is that you're right, but that it only applies to '83 and later 450's.

I would think using a GS500 ignitor on the earlier '80 - '82 450's won't work due to the different signal generators (later ones have much higher impedance), not to mention that if it did you'd end up twice the advance due to both the mechanical + electronic advance being in play.

Happy to be wrong of course

Hahaha I did indeed! One of those few things that actually stuck from college... a coil's resistance is impedance... just don't ask me why coz that bit I got no clue on... hahahaha

Because it has both magnitude and phase components. Impedance is really applicable to anything, because the phase component can always be zero.

Ok, I believe you I'm sure that should ring a bell somewhere...

Yes Pete!! You are absolutely correct. I failed to mention that i was only thinking about the 83 and newer, I apologize if anyone had visions of correcting their earlier model's problem. I am going thru an 83 myself, and making it into a daily rider. I'll be firing her up tonight.. I just got new valve needles and seats in the mail. Already dipped the carbs and replaced intake orings via Mr Barr. I know she fires on both sides but haven't checked the charging, but will probably need a stator hahha the way my luck goes!! I'll be firming up the connectors and riding it soon if all goes well!! tom

                Cool, that makes sense now

Have you got a thread in somewhere so we can follow your progress?

Hello Pete...Did you ever continue your work on using the HEI for the 450? I've read through all your posts and was amazed at the work you guys did. I have 2 GS450's, one is a 80 the other a 86. I'm making a bobber out of the 80 and I need to replace the CDI and was hoping you guys had figured out the problems you were having with using a GM HEI module.

Hi Bomber, no I never ended up sorting the HEI conversion out. It got a little too complicated for my little brain unfortunately.

If you can't justify the cost of the Dynatek, then I reckon retrofitting the GS500 or a later GS450 ignition would be the way to go.

Seeing as you also have an '86, it shouldn't be hard to confirm if it will work or not.

If you do go down that path, let us know so we can be sure if it's an option or not...
