Replacement Stator for 1978 GS400C

 Replacement Stator for 1978 GS400CHi, just been told by Electrex that they don't do a stator for my bike, does anyone have a lead on a source for one? I'm totally rewiring it so any non-standard work around would be ok. I'm in the UK but any suggestion from anywhere would be considered right now.

 All the early 250 - 550 stators are the same. It shouldn't be too hard to find one of these.Ed

 Tried to work out the part number here - http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_p...20GS400/30.htm = 31401-45020
 
 and here - http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gs400-19...st/FIG-22.html = 31401-45011
 
 Unhelpfully giving different part numbers for the same year and part. The first one i put in here http://www.babbittsonline.com/suzuki.../31401-45020/1 and it gives quite a list of bikes including some that are listed with electrex for their G1 stator http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/suzuk...ts-2691-0.html
 
 So i asked them and they just said "Not suitable". Now i'm not sure if that means "we've not tested it with your model so don't want to get into it" or "we've tested it and it doesn't work" I'll ask for clarification

 From your link above... Part# 31401-45030
 supersedes: 31401-45020 31401-45021
 
 Supersedes means the parts interchanges. You can use any stator from within this supercession chain.
 
 I wouldn't worry much about what Electrolex says, it's pretty obvious the G1 stator they list is the proper part if you choose to order from that company.Ed

 Thanks for pointing that out, now it's listing gs450L with that part but not from years mentioned on the Electrex site for the G1 but looking at the alphasport site the 1982 450L uses the same stator. I guess the Electrex list isn't perfect for a cross reference.
 
 Am i right in thinking with these if it's physically the same size, it'll work? So i need to measure it and go with that rather than part numbers?Last edited by Guest; 03-04-2011, 11:34 AM.

 Looking for some dimensions I found this in the fitting instructions on Electrosport
 
 "Step 9 Connect the stator wires to the wiring
 loom. Note: on older Suzuki’s the wires from
 the stator have three different colors. This
 is intentionally done to cause confusion, but
 the output of all wires is the same."
 
 Did they get that from the stator papers 
 
 Seems a lot about stators is designed to cause confusion, seems to be 1000 part numbers for about 4 variations of stator.

 I measured up the old one, in fact here's ol' crispy
 
  
 
 Measures exactly the same as the G1 Electrex but has 12 coils instead of their 18, am i right in not being able to think of a reason that would matter? Is their one likely to be more powerful? I'm re-wiring anyway so that shouldn't matter right?
 
 I think the story of this old stator is the DC wire from the rectifier to the battery turned green and broke, my guess is the owner, instead of lifting the seat up and looking at the wires when he finds his battery is flat, just buys a new battery, and an Optimate, and plugs it on charge each night enough to get him to work and back each day. I don't know if it would have been too late to save the stator anyway but it must have sealed it's fate. I'm glad to say the rest of the bike doesn't show signs of horribly unsympathetic ownership
