flasher module relay
Does anyone know a way to test these turn signal flasher module relays for the self canceling directionals? I have 5 of these units and don't know of a way to test them.1984 GS1100GK newest addition to the heard

Hi,
Your manual should have a procedure. In my manual, simply stated, if you have 12v at terminal B (the Orange/Green wire) of the turn signal relay, but the blinkers are not blinking, then you have a defective turn signal relay. The updated Suzuki OEM part number for the turn signal relay for my GS850GT is 38610-49231. Of which of your bikes are we speaking?
Thank you for your indulgence,

I have 2 bikes that have these, My GS1000G, and the 850G I picked up last fall, the relays in Question are some that I have stripped off parted bikes over the yrs, wasn't sure if there were a couple simple ohm's tests that could be done to test other than hooking up on the bike's which I already know the self cancel options do not work on, so I still wouldn't be sure if that were the problem or it existed else where on the bike.1984 GS1100GK newest addition to the heard

Hi,
I just installed a cheap aftermarket, off the shelf flasher unit when mine went out. It's documented on my website. Sometimes you can even plug a really cheap two-prong can flasher in the existing socket and it will work (a Tridon or Bussman 552 or 522). See the electrical section of my website.
Thank you for your indulgence,
BassCliff

I think we are mixed up on what we are talking about, I believe to different items , I'm not questioning the flasher itself, I am questioning the timing relay for the self canceling option or turn signal control unit,as it is noted in the factory wiring diagram. Didn't see alot about this unit in the manual. I actually have a hard copy of the wiring diagram1984 GS1100GK newest addition to the heard

I tested by disconnecting the speedo cable at the wheel and spinning the speedo itself to simulate moving down the road. The speedo has a magnetic trigger and the signal was coming though the wire harness to the control unit but still no cancel.
If you find a good way to test the boxes I'd love to learn. I think mine are bad but not sure either.Last edited by Nessism; 03-21-2011, 09:31 PM.Ed

The first generation self cancel turn signal control units were very bad and failed often. The 2nd generation is supposed to be better, but they are not all that good overall from what I've experienced. One good thing though is that even if the control unit is bad the turn signals will still function manually. I'm not too keen to buy any used units unless someone will verify function or at least give me a warranty. Needless to say I haven't found one yet.Ed

Is this what were talking about? The dreaded '78-'79 GS1000E and '78 GS850G, turn signal control unit. If it is, I sincerely wish you alot of luck in
finding a good one, I think I've been through at least 10 now and still hoping to find one that works everytime. As far as testing them, I just put them in my bike, since I have one that only hangs up occaisionally when switched left, I think the problem is with the turn signal unit and not the bike.
This is a link to an expired auction so you have to scroll down a little to see it.

I tried to simulative the circuit on the bench and failed. Part of the problem might have been though that I didn't have a working hand control at that time. You might want to have a go by replicating the circuit.Ed

I would need to come up with another speed meter with the sensor in it to replicate, oh wait just remembered I have a spare 1100e gage set with it. I'll try it and let you know1984 GS1100GK newest addition to the heard
