What gauge wire to the starter

I have completely redone my wiring harness from scratch on my rebuild.
    Engine is a 81 1100.
What is recommended gauge wire to run from the starter to the contactor.
My original harness was pretty much destroyed and I couldn't locate which wire was run there originally.

From the starter solenoid to the starter itself? If so, that's more of a cable than a wire. Match the diameter of your battery cables.

The small green/yellow wire which triggers the starter solenoid is a regular 18 gauge wire I think if I'm misunderstanding your question.

Ed, gotta be one of them. 18ga wire and then the cable. 8 ga would be good for 50 amps. 6ga about 80 amps. Dont know how much current our starters pull. If you use a cable with tefzel insulation it has a much smaller diameter.

Yes starter to starter solenoid. I think I have a 10 or 12 gauge ish wire on there now. Its not very thick and certainly not anywhere as thick as a battery cable.
I think that may be where I am having some problems.
