No ignition and no start
Hi, I'm new to the forum so this is my first post. I have a 1982 GS1100GK with sidecar that 'failed to proceed' on my way to work. Symptoms of my problem are: lost spark at approx 100km/h so coasted to a stop then tried to restart but only getting rotation of the starter motor, no engagement. Starter relay gives an audible click. I would have thought the ignition and starting systems were completely seperate but as both issues occurred at the same time I'm stumped as to what could be the common denominator. Any thoughts?Tags: None

How good is the battery? What condition are your fuses in? Don't just look at them, take a power light and verify you have power to each one.Cowboy Up or Quit. - Run Free Lou and Rest in Peace

Greetings and Salutations!!
Hi Mr. Bjorn,
Is the starter spinning without engaging the engine? Or is the engine turning without starting? Yes, check the voltage at the battery, the voltage at the coils. Take the tank, seat, and side covers off and check the entire wiring harness for worn insulation, bad or melted connectors, etc. You'll find lots of troubleshooting tips in the electrical section of my little website.
Anyway, let me dump a TON if information on you and share some GS lovin'.
I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Thanks Basscliff & Cowboyup
The starter motor is spinning but not turning the motor over. Battery is new (2-3 months old). The ignition is also fairly new (Dyna S with a mechanical advance fitted). Another bit of info I hadn't mentioned is that there has been a 'rattle/knock' from the left hand side of the engine on start so the starter clutch may be the culprit but I shouldn't assume (dangerous). Looks like lots more quality time in the shed for me.

Hi,
The starter clutch would be my first thought too. I haven't had to work on mine yet so I have no guide for you.
Thank you for your indulgence,
