    1982 GS550l CDI ground wires hot...

    Ok so my 82 gs550 has a problem. Only one of my coils would get real hot when only the ignition was on. It also just so happen to be the one that would only sometimes spark. So anyway I started to follow wires untill i disconnected the right set. Well it was my cdi. I switched cdi's and still. I found out that its actually the ground wire that has the fish eye for grounding to the frame. I hooked a volt meter to it and for sure I was getting 12v (the ground wire coming out of the cdi). What is going on here??

    GS bikes don't use a CDI. What are you referring to? The ignitor? Signal generators? Please explain. Also, the factory service manual details how to check the ignitor for proper function. You might want to go though this process next.

      Oh sorry. Well its the black box. The middle man from the signal generator to the BLACK BOX to the coils.

          I just went through something similar with my 750 into 550 igniter project. Power was coming down the ground lead in the harness to the plug into the igniter( the one connecting igniter to coils). It turned out there was a short in the gauge cluster when a lead with power going in rubbed up against the metal bracket holding the guages, causing the power to snake back out the grounds.

          You may have something similar in your harness. In your case I'd need a bit more info, however. Does the igniter have 2 plugs, one for sig/gen in and one for leads to the coils? If it has plugs, what colour leads are in the plug for those going to the coil? Does the igniter have a seperate ground wire attached to it or is it siamesed into the plug and attached to a ground there?


          Assuming it has plugs and using a circuit test lamp and with the key on, probe the leads in the connector from the harness to the igniter. There should be 4 wires and 3 of them other than black/white should carry power. If the black/white carries power then some powered lead is shorting to it and you'll need to investigate the harness to find it.

          If the ground leads don't carry power and you still have power coming out of the igniter on that ground lead then I'd have to say something is pooched inside it.....but I'm hoping not.

          Please let me know what you find and if possible post a pic to show us what your igniter looks like and what ground you are referring to.
