Lights work but

when I hit the starter button all i get is a clicking sound, but every now and then it will start. Im new to this so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

+1 always start with a good battery. A load test will tell you (autozone does this). I had a battery that showed good at rest, but when a load was applied dropped to 2V. No wonder bike wouldn't start

As Steve said,clean all your electrical connections.Prob 30 years old.

Hi,

Have a look at the electrical section on my little website. There may be something there that will help.

Make sure your batter cables are clean and well connected, make sure the solenoid is properly grounded, etc. In other words, check and clean all of your electrical connections, repair or replace as necessary. It could be something really simple, but all of the connectors should be cleaned anyway.
