Ignition Module necessary?

Hey all.

I'm thinking about buying a 1980 GS250 that needs an ignition module. I have very limited experience with bikes, and only with Yamaha xs650's, so I come to you folks to ask, is this an easy and cheap fix, or maybe even unnecessary? Can the bike run without it? I did some searching on the internet parts suppliers, but can't seem to find the part. I've found coils and stuff like that, but nothing that says "ignition module". I wanted to get some insight into this before I purchased the bike, so any advice at all will be greatly appreciated!

Depends on if you get new or second hand. Basically the ignition module works by turning the low voltage signalling on the end of the crank into a voltage that can be used to run the low voltage on the spark coils. I think that there are some other things it does as well including provide the rev limiter, but i'm not entirely sure of what they are if it's more than the above spark control.

ANd yes, you need one.
If not a stock one, then an entirley different entire after-market ignition system.

Right on. Well, I'll assume a whole new ignition system isn't cheap, but is it an easy fix? If it's an easy fix I'll shell out a few bucks for it, but if it's a tough electrical fix, I'm not sure it's worth the headache. What do you think? I'm getting this bike for $200. It would be my first bike, though I have been rebuilding an XS650 with my father for over a year. I'm basically interested in the gas mileage to and from work, and to bob it out a little bit. Would you do it?
