80 gs1100E Alternator output too high?
My 1980 GS1100E that I recently purchased is running beautifully. I was surprised that it had lots of blown bulbs (headlight. Tailight, instrument panel illumination, neutral and high beam indicator bulbs. I replaced them all and since then decided to check the voltage out put. I read the battery as I started the bike and at 3000 rpm on choke the voltage was 16.4. As it came down to idle it settled in around 14 volts. Is that normal?Tags: None

Your R/R has failed, or has bad grounds. One of the most common of all GS issues.Ed

and as others are saying either check the connections on the R/R or swap out the regulator.
The old style (single SCR type) will over charge when there are bad connections.
