    GS450 blowing bulbs

Hey all, im out road testing my gs450 project and it's blown two headlight bulbs on consecutive rides. Is this an indication that my regulator is cooked? If so, is there a cheaper replacement than the electrosport unit? It looks just like the 5 pin r/r on my yamaha fzr and those can be had on eBay for $30. Am I missing something?

    Hi,

Yes, the r/r unit is the first suspect in this situation. But go through the stator papers and the supplemental information on my website by Mr. posplayr.

The usual upgrade is the Shindengen 6 wire part usually found on Hondas. These can be found on Ebay too. There is a list of compatible parts in the electrical section of my website.

    Thank you for your indulgence,

    BassCliff

+1 on BassCliff's advice, stator papers are a must.

A guy on here used to sell Honda R/R's ready to go but unfortunately he's had to stop that now, but do a search on the user Duanage and Honda R/R or something along those lines and I think he's planning on posting details on how to connect a six wire Honda R/R.

Try BassCliff's site first though of course, heaps and heaps of stuff on there!

And BassCliff, just a little thank you once again for storing all that awesome info for us guys.

Well I may have dodged a minor bullet but I still intend to check over the electrical system with the excellent info from the stator papers. I went in and had a look and the bulb was ok but wasn't getting power. Pulled the switch apart cleaned the contacts and got some strange readings so I started to check over the wiring. In the process I noticed the left ignition coil was hot to the touch just from having the key turned on. Hmmmm.

Pulled the coil, cleaned the bracket and replaced the hardware and guess what? The lights work!

Nice! A hot coil tends to mean it's "on" too much, so something was definitely not right there.

It would be worth checking the voltage at the coils with the ignition on compared to the battery with the ignition off and see if you have other issues causing voltage drops in the harness.

Before I cleaned my harness, ignition, and kill switches up, I was dropping two volts when the ignition was turned on.

It was more like the posts that attach the coil to the frame were hot, and this was not even from running, it was just sitting with the ignition on... Strange. Anyway, the harness looks ok but I need to do some de-rusting of all the ground points I can find.

Aaaaah... that makes sense. Be careful just leaving the ignition "on" for long periods of time, it may cause one of your coils to burn out.

When the ignition is on but the crank is not turning, the ignitor turns one or the other coil "on", which is why it was hot like that.

As to your grounds, definitely give them all a real good clean up and if you can, put as many as you can to a single spot such as where your R/R ground is, and preferably put a connection to your battery's negative terminal there as well.

When I finally mounted my electrics tray the other night I was able to get all but two grounds connected to the same bolt on my starter solenoid. The two I couldn't were the rear brake light switch and the engine ground lead. I should be able to get good grounds for both of those though, and when I eventually work out what battery I'm getting and where to put it, I hope to run two leads from the negative terminal; one to the starter solenoid bolt with all the others and one to the same frame grounding point as where I put the engine ground lead.

Unfortunately so... eBay etc. has made it impossible for Duanage to continue offering the excellent price unfortunately, which means I never got a chance to get one either.

Hopefully his diagram etc. will be available somewhere soon if not already.
