    Ignition timing

Does anyone know what my initial setting should be on a 1978 gs1000? I am having starting issues. It starts right up when i push start it but when cranking it seems like its to advanced. At least thats what i think is happening. I am an auto mechanic and i have seen this on vehicles with to much initial advance. If anyone has a spec or other ideas as to what could be causing this let me know.

Let's bump you up the line! My 81 has no contact points, but yours does. It makes no difference to points whether you "push start it" or use starter motor. Should be marks on contact points plate to indicate TDC- have you investigated this? As an auto mechanic you know that at slow speed you probably have an advance of 10 degrees, maxing out at maybe 35 degrees at about 3500 rpm under the centripetal advance just like in an old auto distributor.
